Your server, running in five minutes.
Kinonode runs on the machine where your films and shows live: a NAS, a mini PC or a spare laptop. When it starts for the first time it opens a setup page, where you link it to your Kinonode account and pick your library folders.

Your account is what you sign in with everywhere, and what your server is linked to. Create one here if you haven't already.
Install the server
Kinonode runs on Linux today; Windows and Mac apps are coming. On the machine with your films and shows, run:
curl -fsSL https://kinonode.com/install.sh | sudo bashIt installs Kinonode as a service that starts at boot, running as its own
kinonodeuser, and asks which folders hold your media so it can read them. It works on Ubuntu 22.04, Debian 12, Fedora 35 or newer, and most other Linux systems with systemd.Or with Docker
Change the two
/path/to/your/…folders to where your films and TV shows are, then run:# Change /path/to/your/films and /path/to/your/tv to your own folders. docker run -d --name kinonode --restart unless-stopped \ -p 32600:32600 \ -v kinonode-data:/data \ -v /path/to/your/films:/media/films:ro \ -v /path/to/your/tv:/media/tv:ro \ connect.kinonode.com/kinonode-server:latestYour media has to be mounted: the container only sees the folders you give it with
-v, and they show up under/mediainside it. Its folder browser shows the container's files, not your machine's. Add a-vline for each folder, and mount network shares and USB drives on the machine at boot so they're there before the container starts. Keep thekinonode-datavolume: it remembers your libraries and which account the server belongs to. The download page has more.Open the setup page
In a browser on the same network, open
http://<server>:32600, using the server machine's address, such ashttp://192.168.1.20:32600. On the server machine itself it'shttp://localhost:32600. The installer prints the address when it finishes, andkinonode statusshows it again. With Docker, it's indocker logs kinonode.Link it to your account
Sign in on the setup page and the server is linked to your account. Until it's linked, a new server won't share or play anything, so nobody else can take it over. If you'd rather not type your password there, get a one-time claim token from Add a server and paste it in instead.
Add your libraries
Pick the folders with your films and TV shows. Kinonode scans them right away, and you can add more later from Libraries. If a folder is missing or looks empty, the server isn't allowed to read it yet. Give it access with
sudo kinonode grant "/path/to/folder"and look again. With Docker, pick the folders you mounted under/media, such as/media/films.Watch
At home, the server's own address is a complete Kinonode web app. From anywhere, sign in at kinonode.com. Watching away from home needs Kinonode Remote, $5 a month for your server and everyone you share it with.
Setup questions
My server is in a data centre or has no screen
Setup only works from the server's own network, so a stranger can't link a server they found on the internet. Connect through SSH with ssh -L 32600:localhost:32600 you@your-server and open http://localhost:32600 on your own computer. You can also start the server with a claim token in KINONODE_CLAIM_TOKEN (in /etc/kinonode/server.env when installed) and skip the setup page.
The setup page doesn't load
Check the server is running with kinonode status (with Docker, docker ps) and that your browser is on the same network. A firewall may be blocking port 32600; on Ubuntu, allow it with sudo ufw allow 32600/tcp. If another program already uses port 32600, set KINONODE_BIND=0.0.0.0:32601 in /etc/kinonode/server.env and run sudo kinonode restart.
A folder is missing or shows up empty
Installed with the installer, Kinonode runs as its own kinonode user and can only read folders you give it. Run sudo kinonode grant "/path/to/folder". Network shares and USB drives formatted for Windows can't always take that; the command then explains how to mount them so Kinonode can read them. With Docker, the container only sees folders you mount with -v, under /media.
It says it can't reach Kinonode
The server needs internet access to link itself to your account and to let you watch away from home. Check the machine can open https://connect.kinonode.com.
How do I update it?
Your server checks for new versions on its own and tells you on its home page and on kinonode.com when one is out. The download page has the update steps.
Can I move my server to another machine?
Yes. Install it on the new machine, stop it, and copy over /var/lib/kinonode, owned by the kinonode user (with Docker, the kinonode-data volume). It stays linked to your account with everyone you've shared it with.
