Get the Kinonode server.
Version 1.1.0, released 5 October 2026. Free, with every feature included. Install it on the machine with your films and shows, then follow the setup guide to link it to your account.
Install on Linux
Run this on the machine with your media. It takes a minute or two.
curl -fsSL https://kinonode.com/install.sh | sudo bash- Installs Kinonode as a service that starts at boot, like Plex.
- Runs it as its own
kinonodeuser, which can only read the folders you give it. - Asks which folders hold your media and gives the server access to them. Add more later with
sudo kinonode grant "/path/to/folder". - Update later with
sudo kinonode update.
For Ubuntu 22.04, Debian 12, Fedora 35 or newer, and most other Linux systems with systemd. You can read the script before you run it.
Docker
For a NAS, or a machine that already runs Docker. Change the two /path/to/your/… folders to where your films and TV shows are.
# Change /path/to/your/films and /path/to/your/tv to your own folders.
docker run -d --name kinonode --restart unless-stopped \
-p 32600:32600 \
-v kinonode-data:/data \
-v /path/to/your/films:/media/films:ro \
-v /path/to/your/tv:/media/tv:ro \
connect.kinonode.com/kinonode-server:latestYour media has to be mounted
The container can only see the folders you mount with -v. Each one shows up under /media inside it, so /path/to/your/films is /media/films there. Those are the folders to pick when you add a library. The folder browser on the setup page shows the container's files, not your machine's.
- To add a folder, add another line like
-v /path/to/music:/media/music:ro, then rundocker rm -f kinonodeand the command again. Your libraries are kept in thekinonode-datavolume. - Mount network shares and USB drives on the machine at boot, in
/etc/fstab, so they're there before the container starts. - The server runs as user 10001 and only needs to read your files. If they aren't readable by everyone, add
--userwith their owner's ids, such as--user 1000:1000(id -uandid -gshow yours). - For hardware transcoding with an Intel or AMD GPU, add
--device /dev/dri.

Needs ffmpeg. Unpack it, run ./kinonode-server, and open http://localhost:32600. It runs as you, only while it's open, and keeps its data in ./data.
Windows, Mac, phones and TVs
Native apps for these are on the way. Until then, anyone you share with can watch in a browser at kinonode.com.
Staying up to date
Your server checks Kinonode for new versions every few minutes. When one is out, you'll see it on your server's own page and when you sign in at kinonode.com. Your libraries, settings and the people you share with stay as they are.
